FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 3, 2002 CONTACTS: Julia Wood David Willingham (865) 694-6405 Rockets fly for math awareness month at Pellissippi State Rockets will fly again this spring as Pellissippi State Technical Community College joins in the celebration of April as national Math Awareness Month. Pellissippi State and high school students will compete in the model rocket launch from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the college's soccer fields just off Hardin Valley Road, Knoxville. Rocketeers will receive points based on the construction and decoration of their missiles, height and distance of the launch, and hang time after the parachute opens. Spectators are welcome. Rain date is April 26 at 9 a.m. Also during April, Pellissippi State will host a math bowl for area middle school students. The event is 8 a.m.-noon on Friday, April 26 at the Pellissippi campus. In addition, Ron Bridges, assistant professor of Natural and Behavioral Sciences, will speak on "DNA by the Numbers" April 23 at noon in Goins Auditorium on the Pellissippi campus. His talk ties in with the national math month focus on the contributions of mathematics to the understanding of the human genome, catalog of our genes. Math Awareness Month is sponsored nationally by the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
