Mathematics Awareness Month
** April 1999 **

Mathematics Awareness Month at
Almont Jr/Sr High School
Almont MI

More information:

This happened last year... We went out on the front yard with a long piece of rope and two stakes and a couple hundred students and created the largest ellipse possible. We used the two pins and a string method on a really grand scale. This made the local news. We also issued a challenge to any other high school in Lapeer County, MI to beat ours. A school to the north of us beat our ellipse about one month later. If you're interested I can give you the equation of the ellipse and the number of students used and the area (computed by Pi*a*b). Thanks for considering this... Don Davenport

Mathematics Awareness Month is sponsored each year by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics to recognize the importance of mathematics through written materials and an accompanying poster that highlight mathematical developments and applications in a particular area.
