- Short Description:  Kill-a-Watt activity
At our weekly Math Tea, we explore various fun mathematical topics like origami, challenge problems, and games. In honor of Mathematics Awareness Month, we spent our Math Tea exploring energy usage with an inexpensive "Kill-a-Watt" device. We found many different items around the building, like iPhone/iPad chargers, desktop computers, lamps, fans, and even the department's microwave. We talked about these devices' energy consumption while active and while left plugged in. We also talked about AC vs. DC current and how to calculate various quantities like apparent power vs. real power and how to calculate the energy consumption of a device in kilowatt-hours.
